My story

I'm a mechanical engineer with 8+ years across the offshore wind energy, marine, and shipbuilding sectors. My work covers the structural engineering behind heavy lifting and marine transport — from design through to independent verification.

Seven of my years were with Bright Engineering B.V. in the Netherlands, working within structural design teams on major offshore projects. This included the design of heavy lifting tools with capacities up to 3,000 tonnes, and the design, detailed structural analysis, and detail engineering of pile guiding tools — all delivered to classification approval. On projects of that scale, I was one of the engineers responsible for the major FEA simulations: from linear static analysis, to advanced non-linear analysis capturing both geometric and material non-linearity, to cyclic loading analysis used to study peak strain and material strain-hardening effects, in accordance with DNV recommended practices such as DNV-RP-C208. I also have extensive FEA experience with welded and bolted structures.

I am currently providing my services as an engineer to a major shipbuilder in Canada, where I design and verify lift and transport plans for ship blocks — engineered around the cranes and SPMTs available in the yard. This involves first-principle calculations and FEA-based verification of lifting and transport arrangements, workstation and support layouts, and on-site engineering during critical lifts. Every deliverable is produced within a regulated engineering environment, reviewed and signed off by a licensed Professional Engineer before release.

My work also extends into structural optimization — refining plate thicknesses, connections, and lift points to reduce weight and material without compromising integrity. I take designs through to detail engineering as well, producing the information a fabricator relies on to build correctly: weld sizes and types, bolted and temporary connections, bolt grades and torque values, and flange thicknesses. Recent examples include the sea fastening design for a 5,000-tonne cable carousel, engineered for transport from Greece to the Netherlands, and a 70-metre modular tower of bolted sections supporting a 5-tonne cable tensioner, used in the cable-laying process.
